Emily van handel
Chief of Operations & Business Development
Dan’s respect and appreciation for building took root in his high school years, working alongside his dad’s framing crew and learning the carpentry trade. In 2001, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish D.T. Carlson Co., where he could set his own standards and raise the bar on building custom homes. Over the past two decades, Dan has honed his skills, built lasting professional relationships, and grown steadily through client referrals.
In 2025, he launched LAKESIDE Bespoke Homes By D.T. Carlson, marking the beginning of a new chapter focused on his evolving vision—building on scenic rural lots and incorporating cutting-edge sustainable materials. Dan’s business philosophy is simple: deliver an exceptional experience to each client, from initial design to turnkey completion. A hands-on builder at heart, he works closely with clients throughout the process, ensuring their vision is brought to life with precision and care. Away from the jobsite, Dan and his wife, Pernille, enjoy family travels and relaxing at their cabin in northern Minnesota with their three children, Christian, Lauren, and Madeline.
Raised on a fifth-generation farm, Emily developed a strong work ethic and natural drive for seeing projects through with integrity. Her accomplishments in design, project management, and marketing have shaped her into a visionary leader, always looking for ways to blend creativity with strategy. Emily thrives on efficiency, productivity, building professional relationships, and tracking industry trends that elevate both company projects and the client experience.
Emily and her husband embrace sauna and cold plunge rituals during the winter months, while summers are spent boating on the St. Croix River with their two daughters. Year-round, CrossFit and yoga are what continually reinforces Emily’s tenacity and spirit.

Nicholas Nygaard joined D.T. Carlson in 2019, looking for a team that shared the same passion for building custom homes that he does. He wanted to work for a company where he was permitted to slow down when appropriate, and pour the time and attention into the unique details of the home. He found that with this team of craftsmen, who have also become close friends over the years.
One of Nicholas's favorite parts of each workday is taking a moment on the walk to his car to turn around and appreciate what the team accomplished through their hard work and skilled labor.
When he’s not at work, Nicholas enjoys spending time with his amazing wife of twelve years and their three boys. He’s naturally an outdoorsman, so his family loves spending time at parks, going on small hikes, finding some water to splash in, or visiting their lake place in Wisconsin as time allows.
Nicholas also loves spending time doing some light woodworking in the garage and teaching his kids about the many different tools he’s collected over the years. His most recent hobby is whittling, although he still has plenty to learn. For now, he enjoys developing this new skill while making the most of life’s sweet moments—watching his kids grow up and teaching them how to take on this world with confidence.
